Say No to GMO

Here at Temple Nutrition we are serious about the quality of our products for our customers and for the planet. One of the most important criteria for our ingredients is that they are GMO free.

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. GMOs are organisms whose DNA has been altered in a laboratory. This genetic engineering is done artificially; it would never occur in nature like this, also not through traditional cross-breeding methods. Through genetic modification a specific characteristic of for example a plant can be isolated and then transferred to another plant, which previously lacked this characteristic. An example is corn plants that are now resistant to insect attacks. Unfortunately, these resistances have led to the emergence of “superweeds” and “superbugs”. Farmers will have to use harsher chemicals to keep yields, affecting not only the food we eat, but also the soil and groundwater we are reliant on.

Genetic modification came into being to create crops that were able to withstand droughts, insect plagues and other circumstances that affect agricultural yields. However, “none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit” ( ).

Currently in Australia, GMO foods (both whole foods and ingredients) have to be labelled as genetically modified. There are a few exceptions, such as heavily refined foods, which we stay away from anyway. The only GM crops that are currently grown in Australia are cotton and canola, and imported GM foods are ingredients such as soybean products, corn products, potato and sugar beet products. “In Australia, there are currently no approved GM fresh foods, such as fruit and vegetables” ( We at Temple think this is certainly a step in the right direction, however we feel that food should be real, clean and safe to eat.

Lab research and studies on animal food show that due to unintended changes in the genetic composition the nutritional value can be disturbed and new toxins and allergens can arise.
We think that these are more than enough reasons to steer clear from GMO products and therefore we want to ensure that all our products are non-GMO. We, at Temple Nutrition hope to see the Australian import and export free from GMO products.

We can recommend the report “GMO Myths and Truths –an evidence-based examination of GMO claims” if you want to look deeper into the subject
